We promised to get you the price and launch date of the most talked about Android device of the moment, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, as soon as possible and we like to deliver. Although Sammy were eager to show off the device itself at Germany’s IFA, they remained tight lipped about availability and pricing. This hasn’t stopped UK based mobile device supplier Expansys however, who have listed the device for pre-order on their site.

The 16GB Galaxy Tab model will set you back £679.99 in Britian or $949.99 from their stateside site. It will be available from Tuesday 12th October.

Whoa there … £679.99 or $949.99, that’s pricey, more pricey than an equivalent 3G + WiFi iPad, even in Europe. $949.99 is more expensive than the US price of the top of the line 64GB 3G + WiFi model. Clearly, this is pre-release pricing and so pinches of salt must accompany, but pre-release pricing is usually somewhere in the ballpark of eventual retail pricing. Obviously network subsidies will offset the price if you take out a data plan, but we question how many will want to shell out monthy for a tablet contract on top of their existing mobile contract. Lets hope that Samsung follow up with a WiFi only model soon.

This makes the expected price for the 10-inch Archos 101 look favourable, even if the device sacrifices 3G capability and isn’t as highly spec’d as the Galaxy Tab. Our feeling is sub $500 is the price point at which Android tablets will sell in bucketloads, even if this only applies to non-3G models.

The UK's Royal Mail may've been kicking around in some shape or form since 1516, but they've become the first postal service to create an 'intelligent stamp,' readable like a QR code by an Android or iPhone app.

They're being particularly cagey about how the stamp works, in typical Royal Mail fashion (I swear I'm still waiting for parcels to be delivered from 2005), but with the Junaio app being free on both platforms, anyone in the UK can check it out from next week.

And of course, international philatelists could beg their British friends to post them a letter with the high-tech stamp, which is part of the Great British Railways series. One of the features that can be unlocked is a reading of W.H Auden's poem The Night Train, by Bernard Cribbins. [BBC and TechRadar]

We are writing here live from Berlin Germany where Samsung Mobile is about to unveil the highly anticipated Galaxy Tab. This 7″ beauty is the first Android tablet to head to the United States with the feature rich experience we have come to expect from high end Android phones. Unlike the ipad which came to market as “an oversized ipod touch” or “oversized iphone” the Samsung Galaxy Tab offers a similar but unique experience to Android users.

We were on hand yesterday for a private screening of the device hosted by Soon Kim, Project Manager for the Galaxy Tab. During this presentation in Berlin, we learned about all the features the Samsung Galaxy Tab has to offer and got one to use and review.

The Galaxy Tab features a 7″ TFT capactive screen with true multi-touch, pinch and zoom and a 1024×600 WSVGA display. Although it’s not quite the specs of the SuperAMOLED screen on the Galaxy S series of smart phones, the display is brilliant, very crisp and coupled with the 1ghz Hummingbird processor, changing between screens and tasks is effortless and can be done in a pinch.

Samsung has designed the Galaxy Tab with every type of user in mind. First off for the business user and the student, the Tab offers a full version of think free office which makes using, creating and editing microsoft office documents a breeze. One thing I personally love is the detailed calendar app. The calendar app is fully integrated with google calendar in nice crisp views ranging from daily agenda to month-month view. It’s active screens can handly attendees, notes and links. To me this calendar application feels a lot less clunky than the calendar app on most androids which I love and use everyday.

The 4000 Mah battery allows for 7 hours of continuous video and other tasks before needing a charge. This makes the Galaxy Tab perfect for entertainment on long car rides and flights. The accelerometer, display, size and processor make gaming fun, easy and BIG.

Through variuos sites and posts a lot of the specs were already leaked but to use them in person solidified my belief that we finally have the Android tablet Ive been looking for.

The Galaxy Tab features 512mb of ram for applications and another 128mb of ram to handle the base bin. Samsung is releasing a GSM/HSPPA model which can operate on HSPA+ along with a CDMA model. There will be two version choices at the consumer level 16gb on board or 32gb on board with an expansion slot that will support up to a 32gb micro-sd card. The output is via a 30pin connector designed for docking stations. The Galaxy Tab will ship with the typical 30pin to USB cord which also dubs as a transfer cord from PC to Tablet.

The Galaxy Tab is running froyo, Android 2.2 full-tilt with not Adobe Flash support, but Adobe Flash 10.1 already loaded and integrated into the system. Bluetooth 3.0 makes it a cinch to use the Galaxy Tab in landscape mode with a bluetooth keyboard. Also the Galaxy Tab is the first Android tablet to allow true Android Market support and access to the over 70,000 android apps. Also the 7″ size means that the transition from phone to tab apps won’t be as restrictive as say running iphone apps on an ipad.

The Android 2.2 tablet didn't have a specification sheet attached in Pocket-lint's viewing time but was clearly running a heavily customized front end with large buttons for Flickr photos, DailyMotion videos and 7digital's music service. Toshiba Places, also mentioned, may either be a social network or a name for some or all of its interface....

Chalk this one up under the ‘lame’ category: looks like the T-Mobile G2′s CPU ticks along at just 800 MHz. In a world of 1+ GHz smart phones, that’s definitely something of a letdown.

A slower clock speed doesn’t always equate to lesser performance – but without any solid previous benchmarks to illustrate what this new(er) CPU is really capable of, it’s hard to say whether this is going to be nearly as adequate as T-Mobile claims.

In hindsight, the fact that the G2 is a HSPA+ device could have been something...

Rumor mill’s a-spinnin’! The latest out of Magenta suggests that the MyTouch HD could be headed our way November 3rd. That puts it almost exactly 2 months out of reach, but it might be worth the wait if the G2 isn’t everything you thought it’d be (and we know many of you on the original G1 will be long overdue for an upgrade by then). Nothing to confirm, though, but it came from TmoNews‘ trusted source – and they have definitely proven to be trustworthy – so we’ll roll with it.
